Invisalign® is a type of clear aligner similar to traditional braces but aesthetically more appealing, allowing you to have the desired perfect looking smile without all the wires and discomfort. The aligners are not visible to the naked eye, allowing you to improve your dental alignment, without the embarrassing metal brackets. It’s been proven effective to treat gapped teeth, mild bite problems (overbite, underbite, crossbite or open bite) as well as crowded teeth. Invisalign® aligners are removable, but are suggested to be worn 22 hours a day, only to be removed for eating, brushing or flossing.
The process of obtaining an Invisalign® is quite simple. After your initial visit, your dentist will take complete molds of your mouth, both top & bottom, and submit them to the lab. Using a computer software, your plastic aligners will be ready to start your straightening process. These custom aligners will need to be worn from 6-18 months, depending on the severity of your case. It will be necessary to change the aligners several times in the course of treatment, as your teeth begin to adjust to your new and improved smile.
Limitations of Invisalign®
Invisalign® or any other clear aligners are not always the best solution for a patient. Traditional braces are encouraged when there is a need to move molars with deep tooth roots.
Invisalign® is not a suitable treatment plan for patients with a badly shifted bite and can not fix malocclusion. It’s best to consult your doctor on what treatment method is best for you.
Because Invisalign® and all other clear aligners can be removed at the patient’s discretion, there often arises the issue of the aligners being removed too frequently. This slows down the straightening process and also increases the chance of the patient losing or misplacing them (they are clear!)
Invisalign® is a product of Align Technology, on the market since 1999.
